Argument essay - general information and examples

Argument essay

An Argument essay question asks you to give an opinion on an issue and support that opinion throughout the entire essay. In your essay, you may briefly consider the opposite opinion or point of view, but you should strongly and consistently support only one side of an issue.

The following question should be answered with an Argument essay.
Example 1

Over the past fifty years, international sports events such as the Olympic Games and world cup competitions have played an increasingly important role in our society. However, many people think such events are an enormous waste of money, time and effort.

Do you agree?

The specific question (Do you agree?) asks you to consider international sports events such as the Olympic Games and world cup competitions and say if you agree that they are a waste of money, time and effort.

Example 2

Some Argument essay questions ask how much you agree or disagree with the viewpoint given in the question. You cannot simply answer yes or no to this type of question. Rather, you need to decide if you:

    completely agree/disagree
    partially agree/disagree

with the viewpoint presented in the question.

Every year, large numbers of people migrate from one country to another for social, economic or political reasons. Some people believe that this is one of the biggest problems in the world today.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The specific question (To what extent do you agree or disagree?) asks you how much you agree or disagree with the statement that migration is one of the biggest problems in the world today.
