[Essay 20] Essay: Food and Globalisation

Today’s food travels thousands of miles before it reaches customers. Is this a positive or negative trend?

In today's world we are sometimes unaware of the distant places our food, which we buy at nearby markets, comes from. Our food often travels long distances to be sold to the final customers. In this essay I am going to show the advantages and disadvantages of such a trend.

Nowadays food consumers have a huge choice of food to buy because  some of it comes from distant countries some of which we don’t even know the existence of. We are able to eat unique specialities from different part of the world every day of the year. If you live for example in Europe you can purchase fruits from South America and it has never been easier.

Lower prices are very important to families. Thanks to imported foods, the competition between importers and local producers is high and privides more competitive pricing.

There are however, disadvantages of long distance food travel. It is obvious that certain food cannot maintain its freshness for a long period which is why chemicals are often added. This means that even after a month fruit looks fresh and tastes great., but are these substances healthy for people? I am inclined to believe that it is questionable.

It is commonly known that when there is more imported food available, the local food market suffers. Sometimes local producers go bankrupt so imported food is not always a good thing for everyone.
In conclusion I believe that food globalisation has positive and negative aspects. We should choose our produce more carefully and keep all variables in mind when shopping for our food.
